Hi Gotte, both routes are flat and relatively windy. They have a similar landscape, so from a point of seeing beautiful nature it doesn't matter which route you take. From a practical POV I would recommend that you take the Elberadweg. There is quite a bit information in English available on this route, making it easier for you. The south also has more to offer for people on a culture trip. There is the Spreewald and Dresden is very beautiful too. http://wikitravel.org/en/Dresdenhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SpreewaldThe quality of the Elberadweg varies, as maintaining it is a job that has sometimes been delegated to the local communities. Depending upon how solvent they are the Elberadweg can be in very good or in poor quality. But for the majority of its length it is very well maintained. The Elberadweg runs mainly on the top of the dams that keep the waters of Elbe at bay during a flood. The only reports I have read about really bad conditions were a few years ago about certain parts in the Czech Republic. BTW, make sure you do cycle south from Dresden. The part of the Elberadweg from Schöna to Dresden is one of the highlights of a trip on this route.

Vielen Dank. I have read and seen great things about the land south of Dresden, the Sachsen Schweiss (?), and we definately plan on seeing it. I think we may choose to go to Dresden insead of the Baltic. We do like the German culture, and we only have 8 days, so must get as much as possible. Can you tell me, am I right in thinking the wind is mainly from the North West? We had an idea to cath the train to Pirna, explore the Sachsen Schweiss, then cycle back to Berlin. But if the wind will be in our faces. Also, have you any experience of any of the other radwege in the area? Our other idea was to follow the Spree through the Spreewald. Hallo, Ein wirklich schöner Weg von Berlin ( Königs Wusterhausen) in den Spreewald ist der "alte Hofjagdweg". Oder Du benutzt den Spreeradweg . Der Hofjagtweg ist um vieles schöner und abwechslungsreicher. Weitere Informationen zur Strecke und zu der Gegend findest Du ebenfalls unter dem genannten Links. Viele Grüße Roland

Yes, the wind is mainly North-West. This is the reason most people cycle the Elberadweg from Hamburg to Dresden and not the other way around. (Normally you ride along rivers from the spring to the mouth, but not in this case.) From Berlin I would take the R1 and then the Elberadweg to Dresden. Back to Berlin I would take the Spreeradweg or at least a route that runs similar to it. Note that I haven't cycled this route yet - I only covered the Elberadweg further north. But looking at the maps and from what I've read in preparation of a future tour just like yours this is the most sensible route. Hi Phil,
for using the train in D the following tipps:
- it is not possible to travel in the ICE with the bike!
- for using the IC you have to reserve the place for the bike in advance
- in other trans (RE, RB) you can take your bike with you. But there are different rules depeding on the region. I think it is possible in Berlin/Brandenburg and in Saxony. You have to buy a ticket for the bike too.

Hallo, noch etwas vergessen. Von Spreewald zur Neiße gibt es einen sehr schönen Weg. Anschließend bietet sich der Neißeradweg an. Je nach Zeit kann man nach Hrádek nad Nisou bis zur Quelle in Tschechien radeln. Ein sehr schöner Weg. Viele Grüße Roland

BTW, if you are heading for the Elbe river: how about cycling to the east coast of england, take a ferry to the Netherlands, and go on cycling through north western Germany (Ostfriesland) to Nordenham, take the ferry over the Weser river to Bremerhaven, turn north for a few kilometers and then start driving down the "Elberadweg" right from the start? If you want to, you may cross the Elbe river as early as Glückstadt, or in Hamburg. On this route you should have wind from aback most of the time.
